Beverly Hills Cop Trivia & Discussion Question

Hopefully everyone in Phase II enjoyed the conclusion of our first movie, Beverly Hills Cop. Here are some interesting facts about the movie that you may not have known:

1. Several other actors - including James Caan, Al Pacino, Mickey Rourke, and Sylvester Stallone - were originally interested in playing the role of Axel Foley. Eddie Murphy was hired only two weeks before shooting began.
2. The first draft of the script was finished in 1977, about eight years before the movie was made.
3. The entire movie took just over six months make, from when shooting began to when the film was released.
4. Much of Axel's dialogue, including the scene where he tells the "supercop" story about Taggart and Rosewood, was unscripted and improvised by Eddie Murphy while the cameras were rolling.
5. Director Martin Brest makes a cameo appearance at the end of the movie, as the receptionist who checks Axel out of the Beverly Palms Hotel.
6. The movie has earned more money than any other R-rated film in U.S. history except The Passion of the Christ (2004) and The Hangover (2009).

On Friday, Chi and Wayne will post a link to a survey about the movie (you'll be required to take this survey as part of your weekend homework). Today, however, I would like you all to think about and carefully answer the following question:

Axel Foley, the main character of Beverly Hills Cop, does a lot of dishonest things. He ignores orders from his bosses, breaks rules, cheats, steals, tricks, and lies to pretty much every other character in the movie. In spite of all this, do you think Axel is a hero? Why or why not?

Using the 'Comment' function at the bottom of this post, please write a short paragraph (at least five sentences) in response to this question. Try to be as specific as you can, and use specific details and examples from the movie to support your answer. Please post your answer BEFORE the end of the day on Friday, Jan. 28.

I look forward to reading your comments!

  2. absolutely he is a HERO, Because he punishes the bad guy, and brave. He with beverly hills cops killed the bad business guy, Victor and save Jenny. He is brave cuz he never scared victor even he has a lot of power. Anything what he did if is not normal and bad but he never hurt any people. Also he did things didn't follows the rules and has been a lier ( I think the lies are white lies) Anyway, in my opinion, he still a HERO!!

  3. I think Axel still a hero, even he didn't follow the rules. Hero means many things, like the have to do the right, smart, and help people. I think he did that all. He had use the other way to do the right thing. On the other hand if he just follow by the book, is he going to be able to solve all those problem. The answer is not. That's mean you have to view Axel differently, he is smart and he find his own way to earn his hero name.

  4. I agree with he is a hero, because he killed the bad guy-Victor and save his friend-Jenny by his own ways. If he use the right way to find out the result, he will waste more time to search, but cannot find any clue. Through this movie,he shows he has a smart mind and he has his own opinion to handle a case. And I like he scared those people to find out the all of information. Anyway he is brave, smart, and funny. So I think he is a hero.

  5. I think Axel is a hero, even though he break lot of rules but he still found out who killed his best friend Mickey and killed him. Maybe he try lot of wrong way to found out or use his own way to find who is the bad guys. But he still save his best friend Jenny and really brave and smart. That's a hero will do. So i think Axel is a hero.

  6. I think that Axel is a hero. He did lots of things that he shouldn't do, but he didn't pay attention on it. He wanted the revenge for his friends' death and he wasn't afraid of anything. He tried his best to get his goal and he did it. In spite of all his actions were not legal, he can be called a hero.

  7. I think Axel is a hero. Although he did not act in accordance with regulations. Becouse this he is brave and clever. Eventually kill the bad guys, rescue his friends Jenny. If he acted according to regulations, that the situation is no longer the case. Can not highlight his personality. That will be bed end. So I think he is a hero

  8. I think Axel is a hero. Even though he breaks the rules, cheats, lies and beyond, he always do the right things. He insists on finding out the murder who killed Mikey. He does not believe what does he see. He is governed by logic that he has a inference from his research. He proves that Victor is the murder. Also, he put everyone above him. He is regardless of danger to save Jenny. He is brave and smart. As the movie says, he is a extraordinary detective.

  9. i think he is a here even if he broke the rules. He didnt follow the rules, but he catched criminals. if he follow the rules, i think he might be so successed. anyway, he just skip the extra steps of how to deal with a case, he didnt do some bad things. so i think thats ok. he is still a hero, but not a good role model.
