Bah, Humbug

Today in class we concluded our viewing of the second-season X-Files episode "Humbug." For your homework, I would like you all to the share your thoughts (via the 'Comment' function at the bottom of this post) on the following questions:

1. Do you agree with screenwriter Peter Filardi's opinion that a horror film or TV show very often reflects some of the fears or worries commonly held by members of a given society? Why or why not?
2. In your opinion, as suggested by the episode "Humbug," what was the central fear (or what were the central fears) commonly held by Americans in the mid-1990s? Do you think this fear (or these fears) still exist(s) in American society today? Why or why not?
3. Do you think that the fears you mentioned in question #2 above are culture-specific? In other words, do you think people in your home country would hold (or have held) some of those same fears? Why or why not?

Please note that, in order to answer the above questions in enough detail, I am expecting you to write at least two paragraphs' worth of commentary. You must submit your answers BEFORE the beginning of class on Friday, March 25th. Late submissions will NOT receive credit.

  1. i agree with peter filardi's opinion that a horror film or tv show very often reflects some of the fears or worries commonly held by members of a given society. fear is money and business. everyone has fear in his inner heart. the things they are writing shows what they are thinking. i think the central fear held by americans in the mid-1900s is blood, something they can not explain in science, like ET, and conjoined twins. i think these fear still exist in american society today, because people still afraid of seeing blood and something still can not be explain today. i think people in hongkong are interested in the ET, but they are worried something related blood, also. the fears still exist in hongkong.

  2. i agree with peter filardi's opinion that a horror film or tv show very often reflects some of the fears or worries commonly held by members of a given society. i think fear is primitive. everyone is afraid of something. the horror film or tv show always show what scare people at that time. they are from life and reflect life. the central fear in humbug are some diseases that they do not know well, blood, and something they can not explain in science at that time. i think these still exist in america, because some of them still can not be known clearly by scientists. and most of the people do not like blood. people in my country are worried about those things. they watch american movies and one more time, fear is primitive.

  3. I agree with peter filardi's opinion that a horror film or tv show very often reflects some of the fears or worries commonly held by members of a given society. Fear exists in every human heart, but everyone is different. a horror film or TV show very often reflects some of the fears. Many people want see thier fears, although they felt afraid. But the curiosity to see them, they are very concerned about what they fear exists. So TV shows or movies can get more money. becouse people need it. i think in "Humbug" central fear is malformation and blood, those who can not use science to explain things. i think now also have this fear. becouse most of people still these things feel curious. yse, it's in Different cultures have different things that make you fear, you can not stop thinking about them. in my country people always fear about something look like bloody and disgusting. and for UFO or aliens are on the curiosity and fear.

  4. i agree with peter filardi's opinion that a horror film or tv show very often reflects some of the fears or worries commonly held by members of a given society. The reason that the films and shows uses the fears that commonly reply on the society is that this way would make more close and touchy feelings about the fears that meant to be given out to the viewers. In my opinion, the central fears of americans in mid 1990s are the fears of knowing people who have wierd and abnormal appearanc and behaviors. Still, in the nowaday society, the fears are existed around the sociey, however, people are tend to show calmness and respect to these abnormal appearance people. I believe people in my country also have the same fear as the americans. This kind of fear is existed inside of common people who have not oftenly see, or don't have the knowledge about these abnormal appearance. People would feel wierd if they seen that.

  5. i agree with Peter Filardi's opinion that a horror film or TV show very often reflects some of the fears or worries commonly held by members of a given society. Because fears always are touched, and touch people's real feeling. Every people has their fear. I think the central fear of this Humbug is the unnormal people. I think it is very scary, because some people in Humbug are disgusting, and they are doing something what unbelieveable. I think it still exist in American society today, because American scary moives are always create some ugly monster in nowdays. I think American likes watch disgusting things, because it always appear in American moive. This kind of fear is work in my country too, but our movie didn't create this kind of fear, we just show the the kind ghost story. Compare this kind of fear with ghost, I think ghost is more scary.

  6. I am agree with screenwriter Peter Filardi's opinion. Because the goal of the horror movies is making people scared. Once screenwriter start to make film, they will think about the specified audience. For example, when screenwriter make a movie for children, they will choose the elements which children like. If screenwriter make a horror for American, they will choose the elements which American is scared of. So, I am agree with him, a horror film or TV show reflects fears or worries held by a given society. In my opinion, the central fear held by Americans in the mid-1990s is the bloody and strange demon, and insidious people. It still exist in American, because there are still many movie show bloody and strange demon and insidious people. Such as SWA and INSIDIOUS. Some of the fears are culture-specific, such as, Japanese are afraid of nuclear bomb and earthquake. American are afraid of blood. Otherwise, Some of the fears are common. Such as, people are afraid of being poor.
