"Eve," Part 2

I am glad you all chose the X-Files episode "Eve" to watch in class last week. It is one of my favorite episodes of Season 1, and I still find it as scary and entertaining as ever!

As I mentioned in class last week, one of the issues raised by this episode is that of cloning. (Click here to see a definition of what this word means as well as more information from Wikipedia on the topic.) While this episode exaggerates quite a bit -- as, contrary to what the 'Litchfield Experiments' plot twist suggests, no scientist has never been able to successfully clone a human being -- it still raises many interesting questions surrounding this very intriguing and very controversial issue.

Using the 'Comment' function at the bottom of this post, please take a moment to share you thoughts on the following two questions:

1. After watching "Eve" and reading through the Wikipedia page on clones and cloning, did you learn anything new or surprising about cloning? If so, what?

2. If a scientist eventually does develop the ability to clone human beings, do you think he/she should go through with it (i.e., actually begin cloning humans)? In other words, do you think cloning is good or bad? Why?

You may discuss these questions with your classmates, but all comments must be individually submitted. Please submit your comments BEFORE class on Wednesday, March 23rd. Also, please be sure to comment in paragraph format (introduction/topic sentence, supporting sentences and details, concluding sentence.)

As always, I look forward to reading what you write!

  1. I knew something about cloning before. people in UK cloned a sheep. It was the first time that people were successful in cloning somethings. and scientists contiuning doing research, they are willing to clone human finally. however, i do not think the scientist should go through with it. it is bad for the development of the society. there has not rules any more later in the world. you will see the person who looks exactly you everywhere. when i think about this, i feel afraid.

  2. today many scientists doing research in cloning. they want to clone human one day. also, they have the ability to clone animals. maybe some of them hope their research can help people, but some of them just for their reputation or own benefit, like money or having a much longer life. so i do not agree to clone.i know some countries encouage scientists do research about cloning. However, it is really so bad for the world. if people can be cloned some day, the world will not be like we see today. it is massive.

  3. clone is a current and controversial issue, I think everybody know something about it. in my opinion is good because all that means progress is good for us.Also, it will be the most important scientific progess. I am not saying that we have to clone and I don't want a clone but maybe one day someone of us need one lung and he/she would want his/her own lung and this will be possible and i'm totally agree.

  4. Many countries now have clones in the study. I knew before cloning, the cloning of the first in the UK, they successfully cloned Dolly the sheep. In many films are about human cloning. Their original intention had been good, but often there will be some problems. I think that human cloning for scientific, it is a good thing, but in terms of human rights is not good, but can not completely control the cloning of human thought, so I think that human cloning should not be allowed.

  5. I knew clones already before I watched Eve, it's a popular science in now days, and it also popular in movies. For example, the island which a movie I watched in first semester. I was really surprise if people do that to the clones. In the Eve, this kind of clones were scare me, so in my opinion, I dont think so that people should develop the ability of clone human being, because I think people should respect every organism, and they cannot create the life for whatever reasons and whatever methods. This kind of action is really self-fish. I think cloning just better on clone plant, like wheat. Because clone this kind of organism is for create more food for us. So in conclusion, cloning is good for some ways.

  6. I heard something about cloning before, It is very cool to me because I like high technology very much. I like it but it doesn't mean I agree with cloning. Because I think it will affect the security of society, for example, a criminal killed a person after he was cloned,, police do not know which one they should arrest. They can't let criminal free, they can't arrest a innocent person as well. It brings much more inconvenience to the society. I know our technology can clone in now days, but it is not legal. Just like I said, people dont agree with clone but they still research on it. In this cace, people need clone some times, such as people need a part of a person to treat a sick person. In conclusion, clone could be good, could be right. It depends on they way we use.
